Did gods create mankind, or did mankind create gods?

The back cover screams this question at the reader with the preamble concluding that this book by Ajay Kansal deals with establishing the fact that anthropologies and histories lead to one conclusion – mankind created gods!

The writer starts off with a very arresting question in the preface – Why are there many religions but only one science on the earth and you would expect a atheist’s rant coming along in the next 200 odd pages. But he surprises with the balance and poise of his argument with never the book turning onto an anti-theist track. Ajay Kansal takes us along on the journey of the evolution of mankind from the nomadic human to the agriculturist to the social animal by tracing his religious evolution.

He tells us that the religious journey of man began right in his nomadic days with abundant mysteries of nature boggling him scared like night, animals, pregnancy, ghosts, etc. This fear of man gave birth to the concept of a superhuman somewhere with immense powers – the very concept of god. Nomadic man began worshipping the things that relived him from his fears – Fire, Sun and Sky and thus began nature worship. Later with him turning to agriculture the fear of food scarcity came in and with it developed the fertility cult – the worship of the goddess. Agriculture led to settlements that led to diseases, which proved another mystery for human minds, and up came the concept of a punishing god – The Yahweh of Judaism. The beliefs were prominent that diseases are punishments from the super power and ways to please the punishing god were sort out which led to the barbaric practice to sacrifices – human and animal. With the punishment culture settling in, came the problems of cruelty, injustice and exploitation which it required some relief. This requirement of mankind gets fulfilled in the form of a kind merciful god – Jesus of Christianity. While this was the story of the western side of the globe the eastern side too underwent similar change patterns with fire, sky and sun worships being followed in the name of yagnas leading to only affluent strata’s of the society understanding worships and gods. The need was simplification of religion and a prince-turned-ascetic is the answer – Buddha of Buddhism. With a major part of the population understanding and following Buddhism the priests of the earlier practiced religion of the land – Hinduism revamp the teachings to revolve around thousands of gods and millions of folklores about the gods, getting it back to be the favorite of the people.

Ajay Kansal has written an excellent book about the religious evolution of mankind filled with historical facts and scientific proofs. There is hardly any invalid talk that is not supported by hard facts concerning the discussion. Be it the proof of first human burials at Skhul caves in Israel or talk of a solar cult, with the Stonehenge in England and Konark in India as proofs of its existence, he talks in facts. While he talks about the temple snake healers in Greece, he also questions on why only domesticated animals like bull or goat were offered to the gods in sacrifice by priests; why not a tiger? He challenges the reader to question beliefs and rituals not for the faith but for their authenticity and need. He emphasizes that the creator for mankind is not god but ‘fear’ – fear creates gods and still keeps them alive, in spite of all facts and faults. Even while the biggest belief of humanity that diseases are the wrath of the gods, they are the demons possessing humans – something that led to the most gory and barbaric practices by mankind, the witch hunting episodes of the west and human sacrifices of the east – lays shattered owing to scientific advancements, modern fears still keeps the gods thriving.

A work that talks so well based on facts, is weakened some what in narration by the writer’s continuous projection of priests of every religion, in every era as clever self-centered beings who created gods, rituals, traditions etc. for more selfish reasons than social ones. Also the writer being a doctor and Hindu unwittingly emphasizes more on the chapters dealing with diseases and Hinduism, which form the two longest chapters in the book while an equal depth in other areas is missing.

Not one of the best books on the subject but a very decent one for overall understanding of Religious Evolution of Mankind which moved from new problems to new gods to new religions.

After an exhausting 18hour flight, with 2 stopovers (never again!) we finally arrived in Phuket at 11.30pm. We met Meera at the airport and took a taxi to our hotel - Jinta Andaman, and then completely knocked out. The manager, Chep is really nice and soo helpful, and the place is clean and comfortable!
We went elephant trekking on our first day, which was really fun! Later in the day we went to Karon Beach to see the sunset. On the second day (16/4/11) we travelled to Koh Phangan for the Full moon party stayed
there and then returned to phuket on 20th April. We stayed at the Jinta Andaman hotel again.
The journey back from Koh Phangan to Phuket lasted 15 hours!! Back in Phuket we decided to do some sightseeing. We went to see the Big Buddha which is 45m high and situated at the top of a large hill. (In thailand, their Buddha statures tend to be really big)
We then went to see the Wat chalong temple, although we got there after the sunset so we couldn't really see it all too well.Ok, so i'm sure you have figured out by now that i'm not much of a writer (lol), so for more information you can just read meera's blog (meerastravels.blogspot.com). I'm just too lazy to write up stuff, so you will just get a basic idea of what we do. :)

We arrived in Koh Phangan and stayed in a Bungalow, the resort was right on the beach!During our stay in Koh Phangan we decided to visit Ko Samui, which is an island close to Koh Phangan. It was soooo hot at Ko Samui so we ended up staying at the beach for the day. We didn't actually take many pictures because of the heat.( we couldn't be bothered to do anything )
We went the the Full moon party in the evening which was pretty crazy. There were so many people there and neon paints. It was quite cool! The last day at Koh Phangan was quite relaxed, we didn't want to do too much because we knew the journey back to Phuket the following day would be quite tiring. (i know that some of these pictures are lopsided but i don't know how to fix that atm..also i will add more pictures from this day soon)

We went on a day trip to Phi Phi island. The tour also consisted of seeing a few other islands including Maya Bay (where "The beach" movie was filmed) which was amazing..the sand was soo white and soft! Then we went to a few other islands, which i can't remember the names of lol.I wasn't actually feeling too well during this trip, especially whilst we were at Maya Bay, so I didn't really get to enjoy it all too much. (i think it was sea sickness)Later on we went snorkelling at Khai island, which was scary at first but then i got the hang of it. It was pretty amazing, I saw many fishes including "nemo" fishes.

Baked Oatmeal by Mzondi Lungu

Wow! I (Mzondi Lungu) haven't posted in over a year and thought I was locked out of my own blog. I couldn't find it. There have been so many changes in Blogger that I was momentarily lost. But....I'm back and more changes are on the way. I'm changing my format from a little mom and pop :) blog about the family to something more interesting to all of us (not that my family isn't interesting, but you all know what I mean...all the grandma stuff can get old I guess). My focus is going to be more food related. I love to cook and especially bake and get lots of requests for recipes. I am always flattered and give them the recipe. So I decided that this might be a better way to do it.  I'm going to blog about some of the recipes I love to make and hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them.

Along with this will be some changes in my blog itself. Those are under construction and will come a little later but since I had a request for a recipe I decided to get started.

The recipe I will give you today is one that my family has enjoyed for many years. It does have a background. Some recipes I just get from a cookbook, blog, magazine or such, but some are special in that they are ones I requested from someone. In April, 1995 we had the first Woman of Worth Retreat in Ohio. It was at a little rustic Mennonite camp ground near Wooster called Camp Luz.

Camp Luz was special. It was kind of small and primitive compared to what we now have (think Heartland and Beulah Beach). Even with that thought I have very special memories of the years at Camp Luz. The group was more intimate because the size was smaller. If you all remember we even had to rinse our own dishes. But I have such good memories of those years. Pranks pulled on each other that everyone was involved in because of the size of the group. Suitcases emptied and items scattered all over the building, underclothes removed and placed in the freezer...etc. Good, clean, fun. God's presence felt in such a special way. Remember the year the guys came and set up the stuff for taping the sessions and when it was done they were all blank. Obviously we weren't supposed to have those recorded. Special times.

Along with that fun was good, old fashioned food. The first morning they served something none of us were familiar with. As a matter of fact, we had to ask what it was. It was Baked Oatmeal, served with vanilla yogurt and fresh fruit. I have to say I was not sure about this but soon realized something so plain was absolutely fabulous. I asked them if they would be willing to share the recipe. I had bought an Amish cookbook from a shop on the way there the day  before and promptly wrote the shared recipe in the front cover. I still use that same recipe today. I hope you all love it as well as my family has.

This is my go to recipe when we have company. I and my syster Manju Agarwal Haldiram usually serve Baked Oatmeal and Breakfast Casserole. But that's for another day, if you like.

Baked Oatmeal

Spray 9x13 pan with cooking spray.

Mix thoroughly:

2 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1/2 cup oil (can use 1/4 cup oil, 1/4 cup applesauce)
3/4 cups brown sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp vanilla
cinnamon to taste

Stir in:

3 cups quick oats

Put in pan. Bake at 350 for 20 - 25 minutes til set and brown around the edges. Don't let it get to dry.

Myself (Niharika Agarwal and my sister Manju Agarwal) prefers it served with cooked apples and whipped cream. I have also used chunky applesauce. Leftovers (if there are any) are even good heated and served with milk.

**To really lighten the recipe I have used skim milk and replaced the oil totally with applesauce with good success. It gives a little different texture and I don't do this for company but it's still good.

I hope you enjoy it. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think. Thanks!
